PLANTS 🌱

Leca are clay balls and easily found even at Ikea. They are much bigger than pon and contain no fertilizer/nutrients for the plants
Lechuza PON is the name brand for pon which are tiny rocks and fertilizer pieces mixed in. It’s harder to source because it’s a German company. Sometimes I get it on Amazon, but it does have periods where it’s sold out and you have to buy much larger sizes.

It’s best to have a double pot set up. The inner pot will have many holes or you can purchase a netted pot that sits inside a waterproof outer pot with no drainage holes.
I have used yogurt/takeaway plastic tupperware as an inner and outer pot setup. For the inner pot I make sure to make holes by melting the plastic outside with a soldering iron.

The fast way is for plants you don’t mind if things go awry. This is taking the plant out of the soil and cleaning the roots off in water until most of the soil is gone. Soil attached to the roots can cause root rot, so the less soil the better. Then once it’s cleaned off you can put it directly in leca and pon. The medium should cover at least ¼ up to ½ of the inner pot. Then place the plant in the inner pot and cover up until the pot is full. Fill with nutrient solution up until the bottom ¼ - ½ is covered.

The easiest nutrient solution that is good is General Hydroponics Floraseries. It’s a trio of concentrated plant nutrients and you dilute it 5mL of plant nutrient to a total ½ gallon water. However, it is recommended to use a separate container of water to pour the 5mL of nutrients, stir then pour into a ½ gallon container and shaking before adding in the next nutrient mix. This prevents nutrient lockout which makes the nutrients inert.
For my mix specifically I do General Hydroponics CaliMagic (2.5mL for /2 gallon) , the previous mentioned trio, General hydroponics Diamond Nectar (2.5mL for ½ gallon), General Hydroponics Root RapidStart (1 mL for ½ gallon) then pH down as my nutrient solution is usually too acidic, but this step depends on your water. You can purchase General Hydroponics pH control kit to figure out if you need to add base or acid to your mix. Ideal ph is slightly acidic of 6.5
